BEcome a Volunteer

Volunteering through VTB isn’t just about helping others—it’s about being part of a global community built on reciprocity, compassion, and connection.

Here’s what you’ll gain:

  • Put your skills to good use – Volunteer in ways that suit your strengths and interests, with charities in your local area that genuinely need your help.
  • Earn and store time credits – Every hour you volunteer is recorded and saved in your personal timebank, ready to be used if you ever need support.
  • Enjoy global flexibility – Your time credits are valid anywhere Volunteer Timebank operates, giving you freedom and value wherever you go.
  • Unlock Champion status – After 50 verified hours, you earn the right to request help from other volunteers.
  • Be part of a trusted network – Join a secure, transparent system built on safeguarding, accountability, and community spirit.
  • Feel the impact – Know that your time is strengthening real causes and changing lives—both locally and around the world.

How It Works

  1. Create Your Profile: Sign up, link yourself to a charity and tell us a bit about your background, skills, and areas of interest.
  2. Complete Necessary Checks and Registration: If you’re applying for roles involving vulnerable people (e.g. children, elderly), you’ll need relevant criminal or safeguarding clearance. If you don’t yet have the right checks, we’ll guide you to roles that don’t require them.
  3. Start Volunteering: Choose from a range of opportunities posted by registered charities in your region or beyond. Your chosen charity will verify your completed hours.
  4. Earn and Bank Time: Once you reach 50 verified hours, you become a Champion—unlocking the ability to redeem help from other Champions when needed.
  5. Champion-to-Champion Help. Only Champions can request support, and only Champions can respond. This ensures a secure, fraud-protected community of trusted individuals.

Important Legal & Safeguarding Information

  • You must register with an official charity listed on VTB before you can start volunteering.
  • Background security/safeguarding checks (e.g. DBS in the UK) are required for some roles. These checks are managed by the charity, and it’s their responsibility to ensure you meet all legal and safeguarding standards.
  • Safeguarding requirements vary by country. When volunteering internationally, you and the charity must follow the local laws and compliance rules specific to that region.

Disclosure & Barring Service – The Update Service https://secure.crbonline.gov.uk/crsc/subscriber

Subscribing to this service reduces the need to apply for multiple DBS Certificates when you move from one job to another in the same workforce or volunteering role or when a recheck is required. Organisations/charities can carry out a quick online status check to see if an individual’s certificate is still up to date – saving you both time and money.

This service is free for volunteers.

This small annual fee helps sustain our platform, enabling us to connect volunteers with meaningful opportunities and support incredible charities worldwide. Plus, half of your fee goes directly to the charity you are associated with, helping them continue their vital work.
